Fighting Off Brassiness For Brunettes Has Never Been Easier

As some of our loyal readers may remember, I went blonde earlier this year. For some, this can spell disaster, but luckily for me, the team at Olaplex kept my naturally dark hair soft, silky and strong. But that’s not what this story is about.
Unlike our Beauty Editor, who fretted about cutting her hair into a lob for an article, I am a beauty risk-taker and my philosophy is to deal with the consequences later. Unfortunately, being a blonde just wasn’tmore fun in my experience. It was all kinds of wrong.
My mum, the most brutally honest person I know, wore me down in less than a month – here are some examples of her very direct feedback:
“It just doesn’t suit you.”
“You look so much better brunette.”
“Mmm, I’m just not sure about this colour.”
So, after many, many hours in the salon chair going blonde (see what I was dealing with below), I returned to my hairdresser to go back to brunette roots. “Easy,” I thought. Goodbye, purple toning products! Goodbye, disapproving comments from mum!

Having never experienced colouring over blonde, I wasn’t really expecting to run into any issues – but after just a couple of washes, I noticed orangey, copper tones shining through as the colour faded. I didn’t realise brassiness was an actual issue for bottle brunettes.
So, as I always do during times of beauty crisis, I asked our Beauty Editor for help… Enter Pureology Perfect 4 Platinum - Shampoo

TELL ME MORE:

– It contains a blue pigment for cancelling out orange, copper or red tones in brunettes
– Ideal for maintaining and extending your colour between salon visits
– If you’re platinum blonde hair, you can also use No Orange for an “icy” look
– It’s easy to customise your level of toning (start at leaving it in for 1 min)
– The pigment is super strong so wear gloves to avoid staining your hands

Lifesaver

This product is an absolute lifesaver for people with darker hair that throws off unwanted brassy tones! I use it twice a week and love how well it maintains the hair colour I desire while leaving my hair feeling great!

HOW I LIVE MY BEST BRUNETTE LIFE:

One thing I’ve learnt working the beauty industry is that you need to treat your hair like your skin. I use Hyaluronic Acid when my skin feels dry and a chemical exfoliant when my skin is on the verge of a hormonal breakout, but I don’t use both every single day.
I apply the same logic to my haircare routine. This might seem overkill – and yes, I work in beauty, so it’s kinda part of the job! But just like my skin, my hair is in the best condition it’s ever been.
1. I use No Orange Shampoo once a fortnight to banish copper tones
2. I use Olaplex Shampoo day-to-day to repair any damage
3. When I am going to extra effort to style my hair for an event, I want it to look super silky and shiny – I’m loving Shu Uemura Ultimate Reset Shampoo. Sooooo glossy!
4. And when my hair has major product build and my scalp feels itchy and flaky, I use Christophe Robin’s Cleansing Purifying Scrub.
