How Often Should I Use a Hot Oil Treatment?

Hot oil treatments are particularly beneficial for dry and coloured hair. They also improve the health of normal hair. Believe it or not, hot oil is appropriate for oily hair too.
Where your hair type comes into play is when you're scheduling and timing your treatments. Leaving oil on too long or applying it too infrequently, for example, won't give you the best results.

Dry Hair

For dry, unprocessed hair, it's recommended that you apply a hot oil treatment once a week. You can choose from a 20-to-30-minute session or an overnight treatment. There's some debate about whether it's best to shampoo your hair before or after the treatment. However, with dry hair, it's generally advised that you shampoo afterwards. Use an intensive treatment such as MOROCCANOIL Original Oil Treatment 100ml for full hydration.

Coloured Hair

Coloured and dry hair often go hand in hand. Even if your coloured hair is healthy, it's still recommended that you apply a hot oil treatment once a week. Coloured hair needs constant protection, especially if it's been bleached, we'd recommend using a colour protectant conditioner such as Green People Intensive Repair Conditioner - Coloured/Damaged Hair 200mL. The treatment can be applied overnight or prior to washing.

Normal Hair

If your hair is neither dry nor oily, then a hot oil treatment is beneficial but not essential. It's recommended that you apply hot oil at least once a month to keep your hair healthy and hydrated.
There's no harm in performing a hot oil treatment more often though. So if you feel like your hair needs more nourishment and you want to use hot oil fortnightly or even weekly, then it’s best to listen to what your hair wants.

Oily Hair

Those with oily hair may grimace at the thought of applying hot oil, but the treatment will be beneficial in the long run. Oily hair is often overcompensation for damage and stripping. By supplementing depleted oils, you can 'tell' your scalp to produce less sebum.
If you're using a light oil such as Payot Elixir Beauty Oil, which contains sweet almond oil, you can use a hot oil treatment once every fortnight. However, it’s recommended that you don't leave it on as an overnight treatment. Keep your oil on for an hour maximum to avoid weighing the hair down.
Applying hot oil can only benefit your hair by promoting hair growth and keeping your locks nourished. Incorporating a hot oil treatment into your beauty routine is a great way to achieve healthy hair. You can browse our vast collection of oils to find the best one for you.
